This week in...
Math- We will continue learning more about fractions! We are going to focus on equivalent fractions and placing fractions on a number line. Pizza Fraction projects are due this Friday (1/20)! Students will present their projects to the class and solve the word problems that their peers created. The projects that have come in so far look great (and so yummy). Reading- Last week we started reading Wonder by R.J. Palacio to get the students engaged in learning about point of view. So far the students love the book! We will keep reading together and practice identifying POV. Writing- In writing we are talking about how to properly use commas in address, or in dialogue. We will have a quiz on Friday. Social Studies- We will keep learning about each branch of the government and what they do. Important Announcements: *This Thursday we will be having a special science lab that involves going outside! It looks like it may be wet outside so please send students with a jacket or rain coat. *Students have NEW spelling homework! Students should complete one of the activities from the Choice Board each night. A note from Foundation: Parents, The Spring semester is here and that means lots of fun events from Addison Foundation to keep your kids happy and the Science Lab going! Penny Wars runs January 17 - 27th with the final chance to take place at the Winter Wonderland Ball the evening of the 27th. Send your children in with pennies for their grade and silver and dollars to sabotage the other grades. Pennies are GOOD, the rest is BAD because they're what subtracts from that grade's pennies! The kids can drop them in the buckets each morning before school! They LOVE Penny Wars!! The first ever Winter Wonderland Ball for girls in grades K - 5 to dance the night away with their dad, grandpa, uncle, or favorite father figure is taking place January 27th from 6-9pm. The next teacher auction items are coming too! Bidding is now open - Monday, February 6th from 2:30 - 4 is the After School Art Class with Miss Stoddard! And taking place on Friday, February 10th from 6-8pm, a Girls' Night Out Shenanigans After School with Mrs. Hallmark!! Check out the experiences and get more information at www.biddingowl.com/addisonelementary. If any questions, reach out to Laura Glancy, President at [email protected] As always, details can be found on the Foundation website at www.foundation4addison.org. Thank you for supporting our Foundation's work to give us the Science Lab and other wonderful things!

I am so excited to be back in the classroom with the students this week! It's a short week so here are the highlights of what we'll be doing: Math- We are starting on fractions! Students will be bringing home instructions for their pizza fractions project (and a pizza box donated by Papa Johns for the project) tomorrow. We have our classroom holiday party on Tuesday (12/20) at 1pm-2pm! Everyone should have recieved an email from Nathaniel's mom with a sign up genius. More importantly- there will be NO HOMEWORK this week! The only thing that students have is their Decemeber Reading Challenge. They have decided as a class that they would like to have 100% participation on. If students all do the reading challenge they will vote on either lunch and movie or extra recess. *If any of your students have thrown away or lost their challenge and wish to complete it, please email me before Wednesday so that I can get them a new one ([email protected]). Math- We are working on the Properties of Multiplication. The properties we are focusing on this week are Distributive Property and Associative Property. The properties test will be next Friday Nov 18.
www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic-home/multiply-divide/properties-of-multiplication/v/order-doesn-t-matter-when-purely-multiplying (this link has many resources for all of the properties. Associative Property: 5 x (3 x 4) = 4 x (5 x 3) Factors can be multiplied regardless of how they are grouped. Distributive Property: A number in a multiplication problem can be broken down or distributed to make the multiplication problem easier to solve. 13 x 7 = (10 x 7) + (3 x 7) The 13 is broken down into 10 and 3. 13 x 7 = (70) + (21) 13 x 7 = 91 Commutative Property: The product of a multiplication problem does not change when the factors are in a different order. For example: 6x7=42 or 7x6=42 Writing- We have chosen topics and will begin a rough draft on our personal narratives this week. We will continue to learn about using dialogue, transitions, and descriptive language to enhance our writing. Reading- We are Using the book Who Was Paul Revere to continue to learn to ask and answer questions as we read informational text and to answer questions supporting our answers with information found in the text. We will begin studying Paul Revere next week in Social Studies. Social Studies- We kicked off our study of the branches and levels of government with the school-wide mock election today. This week we are focusing on learning the names of the 3 branches of government (Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and Judicial Branch) and the levels of government (National, State, and Local). We will build on this knowledge further in 3rd and 4th quarter. Test on Friday. Students will only be required to know the names of the branches and levels. https://youtu.be/C85z5TPV4SU Guess what? On November 11th, Addison is hosting a Kids' Night Out! There are 35 spots open for a Dinner and a Movie drop off event with 5 of Addison's teachers! Check out the auction site and sign up! www.biddingowl.com/addisonelementary Register first with an alias user name and then place your bid on an open spot. It's only $20 for your child to be watched, fed, and entertained for 2 1/2 hours!! This is set up like an auction - after all 35 spots are filled at the starting bid of $20, you can be outbid...so watch out! This is a Foundation fundraiser to continue to support the Science Lab that we love. If you have any questions, please contact Laura Glancy at [email protected] And stay tuned - on December 4th there will be a really special after school experience with Mr. Cohen - an Improv Class for 15 lucky participants! Science: We continue to discuss fossils, and we will have a test on Friday. Students will bring home a study sheet tomorrow. Fossils- Evidence of organisms that lived long ago Types of Fossils- Imprint fossils (Cast and Mold), Bone fossils, Amber Fossils, Trace Fossils What can scientists learn from fossils? Information about plants and animals from the past Math: We are reviewing the Zero Property- , Identity Property, and multiplying by multiples of 10 (ie. 20 x 7). We will have a test on Friday. We will also have a timed test. Your student should know if they need to practice 5's, 3's, or 4's. Practice with math facts at home is imperative to mastery. Writing: We are learning on dialogue in preparation to start a personal narrative this week. Students could start brainstorming about memories or events that they could use for their narrative. We will be getting started our in class brainstorming for personal narratives on Wednesday. Reading: We are working on Literal/Non-literal language (idioms, similes, metaphors, and hyperbole). Our motto for the week: Don't be Amelia Bedelia- Understanding Non-literal language. During the second part of the week we will be looking at how illustrations inform us about the characters, setting, and mood in literary texts. We will use Patricia Polacco books as her character writing and illustrations are so rich. She writes picture books, but they range from second to high fourth grade levels and might provide some fun reading for reading logs in the coming weeks. As many of you realize, I am getting very close to my due date of Nov 14th. I hope to be announcing my supply teacher later on this week. |
